Analysis and visualisation of social network data:

In today’s lecture, we learned about data visualisation and got a taste of collecting tweets and using that data to create infographics. To begin, we saw a few examples, like the visualisation of social media activity around elections in IndiaNew Year’s Eve in 2014, and homophobic (and racist and ableist) tweets in the USA.

Our lecturer also showed us a breakdown of activity around May 22nd 2015, when #MarRef and #VoteYes (among many others) were popular tags in Ireland. This very much showed the extent of clues that can be gathered from monitoring tag activity, as we saw how things like “tomorrow”, “today” and “voted” became popular tags closer to polling day.

We got a brief introduction to the likes of Gephi, Netlytic and NodeXL (which I’m informed does not work on Mac, and Gephi seems to hate my old MacBook). I then realised what this post was on about, which makes some sciencey stuff mildly less incomprehensible. Twitter have a habit of taking down Tweet Collection platforms, like ScraperWiki Tweet Collector, but the good programmers of the world are fighting the good fight, and new versions tend to pop up to replace them.

The task for this week was to revisit the hashtag we used in Week 5 to create a story, and to carry out both text analysis and network analysis on the tag activity. My tag was, and remains, #WakingTheFeminists.

This was super interesting to me, partly because of the pretty colours but also because of the unexpected connections you can see when you start researching a tag.

This task also led me to create my first screen capture video, cutting about 5 minutes of clicking into a 3 minute video, showing what I did on Netlytic. I used QuickTime to capture the video, and iMovie to edit.

Seachtain 6

Anailís agus léirshamhlú ar shonraí na meán sóisialta:

Handle Cloud

[ÍOMHÁ]: Scata mór ainmneacha úsáideora de chuid Twitter. Tá cló bán in úsáid ann agus tá cúlra dubh taobh thiar dóibh. Tá ainm úsáideora amháin ann atá dubh, agus tá bosca bán faoi: sin wtfeminists.

Sa léacht inniu, rinneadh tagairt d’anailís agus do léirshamhlú na meán sóisialta agus fuaireamar amach conas tweetanna a bhailiú, agus conas is féidir grafaic faisnéise a chur le chéile freisin. Ar dtús, tugadh roinnt samplaí dúinn ar nós toghchán na hIndia, Athbhlian 2014, agus tweetanna inar léirítear an homafóibe (agus an ciníochas, agus tuairimí i gcoinne daoine míchumasacha) sna Stáit Aontaithe.

Thaispeáin ár léachtóir pictiúir dúinn ina ndéantar cur síos ar mhinicíocht tweetanna maidir le #MarRef thart ar an 22ú lá de mhí na Bealtaine sa bhliain 2015. Léiríonn sé sin na leideanna atá ar fáil do dhaoine a bhíonn ag lorg eolais. Dúradh rudaí cosúil le “amárach” agus “inniu” nuair a tháinig lá an toghcháin.

Chonaiceamar Gephi, Netlytic agus NodeXL (clár nach n-oibríonn ar ríomhairí Mac, agus is dócha gur fuath le Gephi mo ríomhairese bocht). Tá sé de nós ag Twitter stop a chur le bailitheoirí tweetanna, mar shampla ScraperWiki Tweet Collector, ach bíonn r-chláraitheoirí an domhain ag obair go dian chun leaganacha nua a chur ar fáil.

Ba é tasc na seachtaine seo ná súil eile a chaitheamh ar an haischlib a bhí in úsáid againn an tseachtain seo caite chun scéal a insint. Bhí orainn anailís a dhéanamh ar an téacs agus ar na nascanna atá le feiceáil i measc na ndaoine (agus iad ag baint úsáide as an gclib).

Ba rud an-spéisiúil é sin domsa; ní hamháin go bhfuil dathanna iontacha ann ach is féidir leat nascanna a fheiceáil idir dhaoine éagsúla freisin, fiú muna raibh a fhios agat go raibh a leithéid ann. Sin an sort rud gur féidir leat a fháil amach agus tú i mbun taighde a dhéanamh ar chlib amháin.

An tseachtain seo, bhí deis agam físeán a dhéanamh den scáileán atá agam ar an ríomhaire, agus na rudaí a bhí á dhéanamh agam agus mé ar Netlytic.org. Bhain mé úsáid as QuickTime chun an taifead a dhéanamh ar dtús, agus ansin d’úsáid mé iMovie chun an físeán a ghearradh. Anuas ar sin, chuir mé ceol leis nuair a chuir mé ar YouTube é.
